How it works
BMI is weight in kilograms divided by height in metres, squared. It is a quick screen, not a body-fat test: muscular people can read high and older people can read low.
| BMI | WHO | Asian cut-offs |
|---|---|---|
| Under 18.5 | Underweight | Underweight |
| 18.5–22.9 | Normal | Normal |
| 23–24.9 | Normal | Overweight |
| 25–29.9 | Overweight | Obese |
| 30 and up | Obese | Obese |
Asian cut-offs: WHO Western Pacific Region, The Asia-Pacific Perspective: Redefining Obesity and its Treatment (2000). Weight-loss drug trials usually enrolled adults with BMI 30 and up, or 27 and up with a weight-related condition.
